Confronting Crosswinds in Aviation

In the world of aviation, each flight unfurls a unique narrative. I am about to share a lesson from one of my scariest flight experiences so far and what I did to correct it.

In this story, we’ll unravel [and learn from] how a routine landing transformed into a gripping odyssey through crosswinds – a journey that tested not only my skill but also my commitment to flight safety.

“The study of crosswind is opportune because, due to global warming, the meteorological phenomena become more severe and strong winds and gusts might come from directions that are different from the predominant winds of decades ago when most runways were built.” Source link: https://psas.scripts.mit.edu/home/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Castilho-2018_STPA-for-continuous-inputs-in-crosswind-takeoffs.pdf

Setting the Stage

Let’s set the stage by establishing that the delicate dance between landing configuration, runway alignment, glide slope, and landing gear is paramount to a stable approach and smooth landing. On this particular day, gusting crosswinds challenged the harmony, leading me to make the crucial decisions on-the-fly.

Battling Crosswinds

When there are crosswinds, it is important to position the upwind wing to counter lateral forces. As the wheels touched the runway, I noticed that it was hard to stay centered, as the wind threatened to veer the plane off course. Upon a quick assessment, I realized the wind had gotten under my upwind wing and was pushing the plane towards the left side of runway.

A Safe Landing

In the midst of the turbulence, my internal dialogue was something like: “I can’t crash this f*cking plane!” but while my adrenaline surged, I focused my energy on what had to be done to get back to avoid a potential runway excursion (where the plane exits the asphalt).

In this instance, I put it into full throttle, turned as much as I could to stay on the runway, and took off. I took a moment in the air to calm myself back down, got back into the right head space and landed the plane. Once I was safely landed, I acknowledged the need for a reset and picked it up again the next day.

The Lesson

Weather isn’t always going to cooperate, and you need to learn how to compensate for a crosswind and be ready for that stuff when it happens. While these experiences are certainly heart-pumping, there is profound and important learning that stems from every challenging experience you have, particularly in flight school.

“No matter how scared you are, you still have a job to do. You can’t just give up – you have to get it, you have to do it.”

There is also a lesson in the decision to ground myself for the day. Recognizing the need for a reset, I returned the next day with renewed courage. As a pilot, mental fortitude is essential in the face of challenges and reflecting on the lessons learned is an important part of the process.

Conclusion

In conclusion, navigating crosswinds in aviation presents a challenge that demands quick thinking, decisive action, and a commitment to safety. The experience shared here underscores the importance of mental fortitude, the ability to make crucial decisions on-the-fly, and the valuable lessons learned from facing challenging situations.

As pilots, embracing these lessons and acknowledging the need for a reset when necessary can ultimately contribute to safer and more confident flying experiences. After all, every turbulent event – both in the sky and in life – provides an opportunity for growth and learning.
